Excitement is brewing in the local business community as it prepares for Small Business Week and the Grande Prairie and District Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 Business Excellence Awards.
“The awards are meant to recognize excellence in our business community,” said Shawna Miller, chairwoman of the chamber. “It’s an opportunity for businesses to nominate themselves or for people to nominate other businesses where they’ve seen them excel throughout the course of the year.”
Some 24 finalists have been selected in seven distinct categories, including business of the year with less than 10 employees, employee of the year, and young entrepreneur of the year. Miller said all nominees stand out for their support of the community and service to customers.
“They’ve demonstrated that they strive to be part of the community, their businesses have been extremely successful,” she said. “They’ve made a mark on the community and on the people they serve, especially for employee of the year.”
Nominees have been informed of their finalist status with a visit from a chamber member and will be publicly recognized for their nomination during the proclamation breakfast to be held on Monday, Oct. 21 at Centre 2000 from 7:30-9 a.m.
The breakfast, which is free for all to attend, is just one of the small business week events that engages the public and teaches them about everything that’s available in Grande Prairie.
“We also have a Women in Business luncheon on Tuesday and we have, obviously, our business excellence awards. We also have a large evening mixer that you know, focuses on different businesses in the community and allows them to show us what they do,” said Miller. “It also gives (people) the opportunity to come out and meet and greet and see what the business community has to offer Grande Prairie.”
Winners of each category will be announced during a gala dinner on Friday, Oct. 25.
Tickets to the gala, held at the Paradise Hotel and Conference Centre, are available to chamber members for $50 and to non-members for 60$. Tickets can be purchased through the chamber by calling 780-532-5340 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
